Sitecore's Docker-based development environments offer flexibility and portability, but managing databases within containers can be a bit tricky—especially when you need to restore a backup. Whether you're migrating environments, testing data, or recovering from an issue, this guide walks you through restoring a Sitecore database in a Dockerized setup.
๐งฐ Prerequisites
Before you begin, ensure you have the following:
- A running Sitecore Docker environment (e.g., XP0 or XM1 topology)
- Docker and Docker Compose installed
- A .bak file of the Sitecore database you want to restore
- Access to the SQL container
- SQL Server Management Studio
๐ ️ Steps
- Whenever trying to restore the db, we can't access the .bak file backup from our local computer and for that we need to copy the .bak file into docker specific folder like $(Solution)/docker/data/mssql as shown below.
- Now connect to your SQL server and authenticate.
- Choose the database which we want to restore. Navigate to Tasks ๐ Restore
๐ Database.
- Select from Device, click on ... and browse the file from your local docker folder which we have copied the .bak file earlier.
- Ensure following highlighted options are enabled while restoring database to an existing database.
- Once after successful restore. A success pop up screen appears.
๐ Final Thoughts
Restoring a database in a Sitecore Docker environment is straightforward once you understand the container structure and SQL Server commands. This process is essential for local development, testing, and disaster recovery scenarios.
Happy Restoring ๐๐
